There are some truly evil characters in The Box of Delights, the portrayal of the main baddie Abner Brown, by the wonderful actor Robert Stephens was as terrifying as the Daleks in Doctor Who.
Another member of the baddies is his wife Sylvia Daisy Pouncer (portrayed beautifully by the incredible Patricia Quinn). In the preceding John Masefield novel 'The Midnight Folk', Sylvia is Kay Harker's extremely unpleasant governess. When she is dismissed from her role she joins Abner Brown's coven. In the Box of Delights, she is a real piece of work and even runs rings around her husband Abner Brown - and she conspires to run off with the Abner's gang's collection of jewels and money. With the rest of the gang in jail, I'd like to think Ms Pouncer can return to her coven with all the riches that she believes can make her happy.
