about

Episode one. The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. Inside the steam, one can but dream.
Additional note - The cutting edge use of visual effects (via chroma screen and the Paintbox system) was revolutionary for kids TV productions at the time, although it looks painfully clunky looked through modern eyes. However, the sound design via the Radiophonic Workshop still stands up today. To make Herne the Hunter seem even more other-worldly, his voice is altered by what sounds like a combination of lightly-flanged and delicately space-echoed, comb filter. I hope you'll allow me the artistic licence to focus on the flanger, the scanning of "Herne the Hunter put that space echoed comb filter down" just didn't seem to work.

lyrics

We left the station now we're homeward bound.
With curates and their collars gathered round.
The devil lies behind their words and deeds.
Every card turned is a chance to cheat.

On the train the fox steals half a crown.
Herne the Hunter, put that flanger down.
Off the road their car flies to the browse.
Careful Herne, just put that flanger down.

On the platform hunched against the sign.
Behind his bag a man as old as time.
The wolves are circling should we be found.
Switch the deck we'll hunt them underground.

On the train the fox steals half a crown.
Herne the Hunter, put that flanger down.
Off the road their car flies to the browse.
Careful Herne, just put that flanger down.

Who would think to check the guards,
of the ones who hold the cards.
Hope for equity just drifts away.
Can they staunch the rich man's greed,
When rats will work for mouldy cheese.
Outside eternity you will face your judgement day.

On the train the fox steals half a crown.
Herne the Hunter, put that flanger down.
Off the road their car flies to the browse.
Careful Herne, just put that flanger down.
